Welcome to the Office of Vital Statistics!

The Office of Vital Statistics provides the following services:

  • Registers Sonoma County births and deaths
  • Provides birth certificates for the current year and one past year
  • Provides death certificates for the current year and one past year
  • Provides medical marijuana identification cards
  • Issues permits for disposition of human remains
  • Provides data for reporting of communicable diseases (Confidential Morbidity Reporting) to the State of California
  • Processes applications for California Medical Marijuana ID Card (MMIC) Program

Birth and death certificates for all years, including current years, are available from the Sonoma County Clerk's Office: (707) 565-2645.

Fee Schedule Update

Assembly Bill 1053, signed by Governor Brown and Chaptered on October 2, 2011, (Chapter 402, Statutes of 2011), authorized a $6.00 fee increase to the base fee for certified copies of birth, death, and fetal death certificates.

This fee increase will be spread out over a three-year period, with a $2.00 increase January 1, 2012, an additional $2.00 increase on January 1, 2013, and a third $2.00 increase on January 1, 2014.
